GOALS & OBJECTIVES

KHUN By Yoo is a high endresidential project at one of the busiest district in Bangkok—Thonglor. This spectacularproject is in collaboration with the world renowned designer Phillippe Starckand his esteemed practice YOO. Located at the prime area of the town, KHUN ByYoo is designated as a project beyond luxury, but also an extraordinary livingexperience that shines among the surrounding high-class residences.

SITE CHARACTER & ANALYSIS

The design strategy that the teamhas come up is to create an urban forest with the implementation of the cityurban grid. Thonglor, being much lively and thriving of a district, it is atthe same time chaotic, in terms of landuse, circulation, and all kinds of barsand pubs at night. Hence, it is important to create a quiet and peacefullandscape for the residents, so that they can enjoy a comfortable daily lifeeven living in the hectic centre of Bangkok.

DESIGN CRITERIA & CONCEPT

In order to bring an effectiverecognizable order to the project, a grid system is introduced as thefundamental guideline of the design. Grid system is a symbol of luxury designbecause it is the most compacted design language in terms of form, scale,design, material, and other elements. The ideology of “less is more” is appliedin the landscape design, which we have defined the project into two major ideasas—Modern by Industry and Luxury by Material.

The structure of city urban grid isutilized during the design process to bring vibrancy to the development.Together with a variety of activities, they reflect the lively character ofliving in Thonglor. In addition, a sense of modernism is imbued throughout thesite with the cubic geometry and the strong linear patterns that further extendthe motif of the urban grid system.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN &PROGRAMMES

In this project, the geometric formand dimension are the essence of landscape design, they create the volume inhuman open space through the careful selection and arrangement of specimentrees. The grid pattern is accentuated within the paving scheme as amethodology of extending the form of the architecture into the landscape. Whilefor the water elements on site, they shall integrate the geometry of both thearchitecture and landscape, functioning as the experimental narrative or mediumthat seamlessly connects all elements within the project.

Ground Floor

Forest is the feature theme for theground floor landscape. The orientation of the landscape is set as the base ofthe grid system in town, giving people a stronger sense of arrival uponentering the property. The feature walls at the periphery and courtyard aremade with special materials, the shinny copper combining with high quality ofstone has formed the unique and luxurious style of industrial heritage. Insidethe courtyard, sufficient privacy is provided for the residents by the featurewalls and dense plantation. All landscape elements, including water feature,pond, lawn and planting area are all arranged with the neat grid layout.Another highlighting feature is the chain water curtain feature wall. Whenwater drips through the chain curtain, it gives a pleasant and soothing soundthat separate people from the busy urban environment from the outside,immediately immerse themselves to this peaceful courtyard landscape.

Pool Floor

Star is the feature theme for thepool floor landscape. The reflecting pools on this floor celebrate the sky andthe stars by the shimmering twinkles of the sky in midnight. While during thedaylight, the light tone of material palette will provide a sparkling elegancethat contrast to the night. The materials used in the pool are bespoke. Specialglittering white mosaic is specifically chosen for the pool, which can reflectthe sunlight and following the grid pattern of paving. Since the swimming poolis sitting under the void deck, the ceiling has been specially made withreflective mirror effect to give the infinity feeling of the space. Duringnight time, the fibre optic in the pool will be switched on, giving people theillusion of swimming among the sparkling stars.

Roof Floor

With the theme of the sky, the roofterrace of the project is designed with the orderly geometry for properspacing, which maximizes the usable area of the landscape. The grid form of theroof terrace is a private outdoor lounge exclusive for the residents. There areentertainment facilities, such as chess game, outdoor cinema and telescope,where people can enjoy the Bangkok skyline and gradual changes of the skythroughout the entire day. The characteristic outdoor seating furnituredesigned by YOO blended with the landscape well, creating a delightful skygarden for the residents.

CONCLUSION

Given the limited area of the landplot, KHUN By Yoo project has successfully create an intimate landscape that providesboth activities and privacy for the residents. It is a residential project thatdemonstrates the definition of modern luxury living, which provides comfort,multifunctional design that fully utilizes the void deck space.
