Concept - Erect a Tower
受到西班牙建筑师卡拉特拉瓦的启发,该项目通过仿生学探索新型结构系统、空间序列和功能组织。竖脊肌和脊椎的相互关系被康复学家认为是保持脊椎动物身体直立的关键。通过对它们的研究,许多石膏原型被浇筑了出来,他们仅由简单的支点和拉力组成,却能通过三角形的稳定性形成微妙的平衡。平面的构成由对脊柱横剖的研究得来。经过多次的演变与简化,由脊柱得来的平面几何构成成为整合空间,功能,结构,立面,流线等多种复杂层级的核心韵律:
1. 结构上,中核被视为支点放在楼板一侧,而中庭则像椎孔一般处于中央,中核另一侧的拉索提供拉力,使得楼体如同悬空般垂直分为五段,每段之间形成空中广场。
2. 空间上,结构创新带来的较大开间使得平面有着明显的小、中、大空间序列,中庭也符合斐波那契数列,依次变化。
3. 功能上,塔楼被分为三个行政单元:小米企业总部,武汉大学创新孵化中心,城市纽扣空间。塔楼上部为员工提供更大的办公空间,下部为市民提供更多的中庭空间。体量之间通过观光电梯联系,而不同身份的人都能在其所属的体量中通过防火剪刀楼梯解决所有功能需求。
The project started with an investigation of the architectural strategies of a contemporary architect, Santiago Calatrava, attempted to discover a new form of structural system, space order and functional organization through bionics. The relationship between the erector spinae and the spinal column is considered by rehabilitation scientists to be the key to keeping the body upright in vertebrates. Through the study of their relationship, multiple plaster prototype models were made, consisting of simple fulcrums and tensions, yet able to maintain a subtle balance by means of the mechanical relationship of the triangle. The composition of the plan was derived from a study of the horizontal section of the spine. Through many evolutions and simplifications, the geometric composition of the spine-plan has become the core rhythm that integrates the complex layers of space, function, structure, elevation and circulation.
1. Structurally, the core is seen as a fulcrum on one side of the slab, while the cables provide tension that allows the tower to be divided vertically into 5 suspended clusters, with each cluster forming a sky plaza between them and the atrium is central like a vertebral foramen.
2. Spatially, the large openings brought about by structural innovation allow for a strong spatial hierarchy of XL L M and S. and the atrium conforms to the Fibonacci sequence, which changes in turn.
3. Functionally, the tower is divided into three administrative units: XMi We-headquarters, Technology and Innovation Incubation Center of WHU, and Urban Button Space. The upper part of the tower provides more office space (solid) for staff and the lower part provides more atrium space (void) for the public. The clusters are linked by sightseeing lifts, while different identities are able to solve all their functional needs in one cluster by the fireproof scissor staircase.
Intuition - Cartography Study of Human Spine
卡拉特拉瓦对于几何和结构的解读,在绘制草图和制作原型模型的过程中被重新演绎。沉重感十足的石膏浇筑的模型制作方式,是为了发掘该混合功能塔楼的新型结构可能。从脊柱结构学习而来的“三力平衡”的力学方式被扩展和解读。石膏体量被PVC和3D打印反模塑造而成。体量模型的“有”和“无”部分由石膏和空气表示。在复合功能塔的设计过程中,石膏的浇注也被作为一种组织策略,以得出方案的总体组织方法。
Sketch and prototype-model-making were used to explore the ideas and form-making method of the Santiago Calatrava. Heavy plaster casting was made to explode the new structure possibilities of the mix-used tower. The mechanics of the "triple balance of forces", from the structure of the spine, is extended and reinterpreted. Volumes are shaped by PVC and 3D printing moulds. The 'solid' and 'void' parts of the massing model are represented by plaster and air. In the design process of the complex tower, the casting strategy of the plaster was also taken as an organizational strategy to derive the overall organizational method of the program.

The principle of multiple renditions is to bringgeometry the organic shape of the spine, but retain its mechanicalcharacteristics and volumetric form. Firstly, the horizontal section of thespine is abstracted into simple circular arcs, then reconstructed into simpletriangular shape, and finally the golden series is applied to delineate thelongitudinal atrium size and lever length according to the rhythmic variationfrom the cervical to the lumbar spine. The tower thus has a strong sense ofrhythm, both in terms of vertical space, planar space and mechanical metrics.
在功能配置方面,大开间的空间被用作办公,研讨和交流,中等和小空间被用作休息和娱乐,每一个部分都有一个贯通的中庭和两个附属中庭。管线,机房和厕所集中在核心筒附近。观光电梯前的单墙,既是进入时的照壁,厕所门的围挡,更是塔楼结构的重要支点。塔楼每个部分的平面内部划分十分自由,但也符合演绎过程中的平面线稿。 In terms of functional configuration, the L(large)spaces are used for offices, seminars and communication rooms, while the M(medium)and S(small) spaces are used for rest and recreation, each cluster has a mainatrium and two side atriums. Pipework, plant rooms and toilets are concentratednear the core. The single wall in front of the sightseeing lifts acts as a screenwall on the entry, an enclosure for the toilet doors and an important fulcrumfor the structure of the tower. The internal division of the plan of each clusteris liberal, but also conforms to the interpretation process.
Expression - Dichotomy of Rib and Skin
塔楼的二级结构应当兼具传递拉索力矩和抵抗侧立的双重作用,轻量化的预浇筑桁架被选为每个部分的独立二级结构。为了尽量减少桁架体量对室内视野的影响,GH-Peregrine 软件被用来优化桁架体系。输入的简化受力图由制图过程中的杠杆原理计算得来,因此无需计算实际的重量,所有的力都能用G进行代数表示。通过改变材料性能和弹性模量,多种桁架组织方案被计算得出,最终人为选择最优一组,作为塔楼的二级结构。
The secondary structure of the tower should serve the dual purpose of transmitting the moment of cables and resisting lateral force. Lightweight pre-cast trusses were selected as the independent secondary structure of each cluster. In order to minimize the impact of the truss volumes on the interior views, GH-Peregrine was used to optimize the truss system. The input simplified force diagrams were calculated from the leverage principle in the cartography process, so that no actual weight calculations were required and all forces could be represented algebraically in G. By varying the material properties and modulus of elasticity, multiple truss solutions were calculated and the optimal set is finally selected artificially as the secondary structure of the tower.
桁架体系与塔楼表皮既分离又结合,成为塔楼部分的蝉衣,包裹内部的虚实空间。
The truss system is both separate and integrated with the envelope of the tower, becoming the cicada coat of each cluster and wrapping the solid and void space inside.
