The 2011 Londonriots were a catalyst for an extensive high street improvement programme acrossthe city, with the revitalised Croydon South End being the first delivered aspart of the ‘Connected Croydon’ programme.

The London Boroughof Croydon wanted to re-establish the high street as a place of enterprise andcommunity – to prioritise people over cars and rebuild a sense of civic pride.One of the biggest challenges was to find new ways to draw people to the site,encourage them to stay, and tell their friends.

The Hassell plan wasto stitch together the streets, squares, and open spaces of Croydon to create awelcoming, vibrant, and safe public places that people wanted to be part of.Working with architects We Made That, a vacant property was transformed into‘The Ideas Shop’ for community consultation, enabling a design that addressedmany of the issues raised by the people that live and work in the area.

The design was driven by the philosophy of a ‘right tograze’ to promote increased and more diverse uses of the highstreet – an environment where visitors can move easily between restaurants,shops, and businesses.

Work includedimprovements to tired shop fronts and removal of clutter from the street to putthe heritage of local buildings back on the show. New trees, seating and pavingvisually soften and connect the gathering areas, and public art and bespokegraphics bring colour and life to walls and windows. The width of the road was narrowed and the footpath expanded to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment, and cycle facilities were added.

Croydon Council has received positive feedbackfrom local businesses and residents, and several restaurants have gainedapproval to offer alfresco dining – making the most of the enhanced publicrealm.
