TheNanjing Tangshan Geopark Museum, 40 kilometres east of Nanjing, is the site ofone of the world's most fascinating archaeological discoveries and home toChina's new Great Relic Museum. Hassell designed the museum's gatewayplaza and surrounding parkland connections for the Nanjing TangshanConstruction Investment and Development Company, following an internationallandscape design competition.

公园的整体面积得以扩充，其内主要景点之一便是葫芦洞（Hulu Caves）——1993年在此发现了可追溯到0.16-0.60百万年前的直立化石，同时展示给游客们的是古生代地质构造的古代采石场。地质公园内部开阔的公共空间由建筑工作室Odile Decq设计成同博物馆连接成为一个整体，并通过整合和重组使得公园内部的各个景点均匀分布于其15公顷的开放空间中，从而创造出这样一片极具启发性的创新型旅游目的地。

Themajor attractions within the wider park include the Hulu Caves, where homoerectus fossils dating back 0.16-0.60 million years were discovered in 1993,and an ancient quarry exhibiting geological formations of the Paleozoic era. The geopark's generous newpublic realm will unify the museum (by architect Studio Odile Decq) with thevarious attractions spread across its 15-hectares of open space to create anenlightening new tourist destination.

Hassell驻中国负责人安德鲁·威尔金森表示：“公园博物馆的这一设计项目，既要满足旅游园区的商业目标，又要尊重该景点的国际意义。我们对于此设计愿景的回应，是庆祝并强化广场在此处的门户地位、博物馆的建筑形式以及地质公园的很多既存的，非凡特质——在为游客提供对该遗址的探索之旅的同时，揭示其中的历史故事和形成过程。”

"Thedesign needed to cater for the tourist park's commercial objectives whilerespecting the site's international significance," said Andrew Wilkinson,Hassell Principal in China. "Our response celebrates the plaza's gatewaystatus, the museum's architectural form, and the geopark's many extraordinaryfeatures – offering visitors an exploratory journey through the site thatreveals its history and formation along the way," he said.

广场的整体外观同这处场地的地形线互为呼应，这让它的轮廓就如同拥有生命的地质活动一般，缓慢移动——不仅优化了现有地形的缺陷，同时亦在不同的功能分区之间建立其清晰无比而又能无缝衔接的动态图案，并与周围的交通基础设施和城区公园空间紧密结合。

Theoverall look of the plaza echoes the site's contour lines, which shift likegeological activity. It optimises the existing topography to establish clearand seamless patterns of movement between all functions, integrating with thesurrounding transport infrastructure and regional parkland.

当人们到达广场和记忆塔处，会被提供一个聚集点——这里标志着每一场旅程的正式开始；从这个空间，游客可以带领自己的参观队伍进入博物馆观赏探索，或是在各具特色的花园之中往来穿梭，又或是沿着嵌有描绘着史前生命进化的雕刻痕迹的，攀缘小路缓步行走。

Thearrival plaza and memory tower provide a gathering point, marking the start ofeach journey. From this space, visitors can take their own expedition to themuseum, weaving through the feature gardens and along the climbingpathways that are embedded with carvings depicting the evolution of prehistoriclife.

特色花园的灵感来自古生代每个时期的环境特征：从寒武纪景观的岩石，微生物土壤外壳，到志留纪湿地和石炭纪沼泽森林，于之相对应的种种植被和元素的选择和细节上的精巧安排和设计，都赋予了这一座“史前”花园以彼时地点的本质。

Thefeature gardens are inspired by the environmental characteristics of eachperiod of the Paleozoic era. From the rocky, microbial soil crust of theCambrian landscape, through to the Silurian wetlands and Carboniferous swampforest, the selection and detailing of counterpart plants and elements givesthe 'prehistoric' gardens an essence of that time and place.

公园的设计重新使得本地植被焕发出种种生机，因为它对于微生态系统的再创造，从而进一步促使甚至是真正意义上培育出了专属于本地的动植物栖息地；一条清洁的生态留存水道，能够及时处理场地的径流水，以支持自然环境的健康化循环和整座公园的可持续运转；总而言之，博物馆广场是Hassell主要景观工程的现已完成的第一阶段，而更宽广的公园场地的建设将在之后的分布阶段中逐步完成。

Theparkland design regenerates native vegetation and creates micro-ecosystems thatwill foster the local habitat. A cleansing, bio-retention waterway will treatsite run-off to support the health of the natural environment and the sustainableoperation of the park. The museum plaza, the first phase of themajor landscape works, is now complete. Construction of the wider parkland willbe completed at a later stage.
