Victoria Quarter is a special area in Sheffield, because it is close to the city center and played a significant role in the history of the development of Sheffield. The new site should includes some multifunctional spaces and providing more public open spaces for users, which can encourage more people to participate in the site and create more potential activities and healthy lifestyle for surrounding users.
However, the original site also has some environmental problems. For example, due to the hard paving, site cannot solve the rain water collection problem easily, which may impact surroundings; moreover, the eastern industry area should be redesigned and meet new train station usage requirement in the future. Meanwhile, the condition of surrounding transport should be improved.
Design aims 1. Improving the flood problem. 2. Redesigning industry area to meet space usage for train station. 3. Improving the condition of transport, especially people usage. 4. Increasing people’s participation.
The concept of design is ecological entrance of Sheffield. It focuses on the site environment problem and people’s participation. Using redesign the plenty hard paving to improve the nature environment quality, encourage more users to participate in the site and appreciate the beauty and history of site.
According to ecology scheme of the site, the design form idea comes from the related form-leaf vein. Using the idea of leaf vein in site is not only create a diverse urban planning project, but also this form is related to the ecological conception and the Britain’s greenest city background. Moreover, due to the site outline is similar to the leaf vein, using the irregular polygon create a multifunctional and diverse public urban site for people appropriately.
